What is included with Home Care for stroke?

A stroke impacts people in different ways, depending on various factors such as the location of where the brain is damaged and its severity. It also depends on the type of stroke. An Ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage in the brain’s blood supply whereas a haemorrhagic stroke is caused by bleeding in or around the brain. This is why we listen to the needs of you or your loved one and tailor our care to suit your specific needs and requirements.

Choosing Home Care after a stroke is a big decision – with the emotional impact a stroke can bring, familiarity and consistency are vital factors to consider.

Whatever you or your loved one need to manage the everyday impact of a stroke, we can help. Our Stroke Home Care services includes:

Live-in Stroke Care

Our Live-in Stroke Care is a suitable option if you or your loved one are experiencing symptoms following a stroke that are severe enough to require continuous support vs daily visits. With this type of Home Care, a specially trained Care Worker moves into the home to provide care. We match a suitable Live-in Carer who suits you or your loved one based on personality, common interests as well as skills to maintain our reputation for quality care.

Stroke Respite Care

Being a full time caregiver for a loved one after a stroke can make finding time for yourself more challenging. It’s important to have a break from time to time. Our Respite Care for stroke patients can help, offering usual caregivers regular time off for themselves. Our Care Workers are fully trained and know how to deliver quality care with compassion in your absence. They will fit into your usual routine to provide care that is tailored to the needs of your loved one.

Personal Care

Our Personal Care at home service helps you or your loved one with daily tasks that may become more challenging after a stroke. These can include assistance with washing and using the bathroom, as well as getting dressed and ready for the day. Our Home Care Workers help maintain Personal Care routines with dignity and respect.

Household Tasks

If you or your loved one find daily household tasks are becoming more challenging following a stroke, our Carers can help. Many of our clients receive support with everyday Domestic Care tasks such as laundry, washing up and keeping your home neat and tidy.

Meal Preparation

Our Home Care Workers can prepare nutritious meals for you or your loved one if this becomes difficult following a stroke. They take into account any likes, dislikes and allergies. They also make sure you or your loved one eats and drinks regularly.

Companion Care

We all need someone to talk to from time to time. Our Home Care for stroke patients can include valuable Companion Care for you or your loved one. Even if a stroke has restricted you or your loved one’s ability to communicate, our Care Workers are trained to understand your needs. We aim to prevent elderly loneliness and provide support when it’s needed most. Sometimes, all that’s needed is a nice chat with a friendly face.

How can Stroke Home Care help?

Stroke Home Care can help you or your loved one adjust and provide support as you adapt to a new normal. We have experience helping clients who are dealing with the impact of having a stroke, such as:

Muscle Weakness

Most people who have had a stroke experience muscle weakness, with 75% of people experiencing leg weakness.1 This brings difficulties with mobility, potentially increasing the likeliness of a fall.

Our Home Care Workers help by assisting you or your loved one with getting around. They are fully trained in the use of mobile hoists. They can also help by completing daily tasks to help you stay on top of tasks.

Incontinence

Following a stroke, some people may experience difficulties controlling their bladder and bowel movements. Our Care Workers can help with a range of Personal Care tasks including help with washing and going to the bathroom.

All our Care Workers are fully trained and will always deliver quality care with respect and ensure your or your loved one’s resect and dignity are upheld.

Fatigue

After a stroke, many people experience fatigue or tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest. Due to this, daily tasks may become harder to carry out.

Our Home Care Workers can help by completing tasks around the home such as hoovering the carpet, doing the laundry or preparing meals.

Mental Wellbeing

The impacts of a stroke aren’t just physical but can cause detrimental impacts on someone’s mental health. This includes anxiety, frustration and depression.

We understand mental health is equally as important as physical health. Our Carers are always there to listen to any concerns and provide valuable companionship.

Cognitive Problems

As a stroke affects the brain, survivors often experience cognitive impairment. This often includes difficulties with concentration, memory, confusion and communication.

At Alina Homecare, our Stroke Home Care Assistants can help by reassuring you or your loved one and providing necessary reminders.

What are the benefits of Home Care for stroke patients?

Deciding whether to move into a care home or receive after Stroke Care at Home is a big decision. For some people, a care home will be the best option to manage their needs. However, there are many advantages to receiving Home Care after a stroke:

Familiarity

A stroke can often impact someone’s memory and increase feelings of confusion. Home Care after a stroke means you or your loved one can remain in the comfort and familiarity of the home. This reduces stress and disruption compared with moving somewhere unfamiliar like a care home.

Independence

We all want to stay in control of our lives as much as possible. Post Stroke Care at Home allows you or your loved one to continue your usual routines in your local community. At Alina Homecare, care services are always assessed and adapted to meet changing needs and goals.

Community

In care homes, family and friends are sometimes only allowed to visit within visiting hours. With Stroke Home Care, you control your own visiting schedule. Many of our clients also find staying home means their loved ones can provide additional support if circumstances require it.

Reassurance

A stroke can impact emotional wellbeing and communication, which can make stroke patients feel lonely. Our Stroke Home Care Assistants offer friendly and comforting companionship. They don’t just provide physical support to manage the impacts of a stroke but also emotional support.

Safety

Safety is important to consider when choosing care options. Often, Home Care is safer than a care home. Research proves people living in care homes are three times more likely to have a fall than those at home.2 73% of people have a fall within a year after their stroke so this is particularly important.3

Cost Effective

Live-in Care or Home Care for stroke patients can be more cost effective than a care home. If you or your loved one require more or less care, we can adjust your package. This flexibility is especially useful in the immediate aftermath of a stroke; you can pay for 24 hour care initially then reduce support, if required.

Cost of Stroke Home Care

The cost of our Stroke Home Care service is determined by different factors. Firstly, it depends on the level of care and support required. This can include the service chosen, such as visiting care or Live-in Care. It also depends on the frequency of care and your location.

After leaving hospital, you or your loved one may also be entitled to grants or other forms of other financial support to help with funding home care.

About Stroke Care for you

What is a stroke?

A stroke is a serious and sometimes even life threatening condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off. Cells in the brain require oxygen and other nutrients. When this supply is cut off, these cells begin to die.

Strokes have two main causes; either a blood clot or a burst blood vessel. Although a stroke can happen to anyone, certain conditions can increase the chances of one occurring. This includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol, irregular heartbeats, diabetes and lifestyle.

It’s estimated that over 100,000 people in the UK have a stroke every year.4 The impact of a stroke can be treated with some medications. This depends on the type of stroke and what caused it. Most people who have had a stroke are left with long term life changing impacts.

At Alina Homecare, we provide quality assured and compassionate care to help you or your loved one manage the impact of a stroke. The challenges a stroke brings differ significantly for each person. We understand this and tailor our Stroke Care services to each client to support their independence and if possible, their recovery.

Is Stroke Home Care better than a care home?

Making the choice between Home Care and a care home for a loved one after a stroke can be difficult. Your decision ultimately depends on their care needs whilst keeping their best interests at heart.

With our after Stroke Care at Home, you or your loved one can avoid the stress and upheaval of moving and continue to live in the familiarity of the home. If you or your loved one need continuous care, our Stroke Live-in Care is a great option. A Live-in Carer will move into the home with you or your loved one and provide care as and when it’s needed.

However, if you or your loved one requires more advanced care after a stroke, it may be safer and more suitable to consider a care or nursing home where specialist resources can be provided.

When should I start looking for Stroke Care?

If the impact of a stroke has meant you or your loved one now struggle to live safely and independently at home, it’s the right time to be looking for care arrangements. There are many different care options to choose from depending on the level of care needed. At Alina Homecare, our care visits can be as short as 30 minutes or we can provide a Live-in Carer who can deliver care 24/7.

We understand this is a challenging decision that requires a lot of thought. If you’d like to discuss these options and find out more about the services we can offer, have a chat with a member of our Team.
