11/04/19Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Day

Today is Parkinson’s Awareness Day. The purposes of today are to raise recognition, as well as commending researchers for their hard work in trying to develop a greater understanding for the disease.

What is Parkinson’s disease?

Parkinson’s disease is developed in those who have a lack of dopamine producing nerve cells because these cells have died. Dopamine is a chemical that carries messages to the brain that instruct your body to move. This is why those with Parkinson’s have decreased mobility and speech due to not having enough dopamine.

Who gets Parkinson’s?

It’s currently unknown what causes Parkinson’s, however it’s thought that genetics and environmental factors make these nerve cells die.
